So today, was at my cousin's house, and pizza was served for dessert - yes, it was weird to have it for dessert - but nevertheless, i was about to indulge when my cousin suddenly mumbled a "its a sin man" and I remembered this bio project on unhealthy snack foods!
(see, this project does make me more aware of what i digest! but that also makes me kind of picky...)
I didn't eat it in the end, mainly because it is unhealthy! To prove this, let me 'enlighten' you with some statistics:
For only ONE slice (100g) of Cheese Pizza,
Calories - 271 (1135 kJ)
Carbohydrate - 31.6g
Total fats - 10.9g
Saturated fat - 4.4 g (btw, this section should be ZERO for it to be considered healthy)
so unhealthy!! and this pizza most likely does not incluude other ingredients like mushrooms, capsicum, pepperoni!! Which makes the readings sound really guilty, doesn't it?
Furthermore, pizzas (especially those in Singapore) have very thick crust and this means more carbohydrates! And we did learn that excess carbohydrates will be converted to fats right? And fats, to many of us, is unacceptable!
SO... STOP EATING PIZZAS!!
Which is near impossible. No one will take my 'advice'!! After all, almost everyone, especially 'foodies' (food junkies) will argue till the end of the earth that pizzas are not THAT unhealthy, and that they have a lot of vegetable etc.. you know, a lot of excuses basically.
I, moreover, cannot resist pizzas as well! Come on, who can resist the succulent mushrooms, nicely salted slices of ham, piping hot pieces of pepperoni, honey-like cubes of pineapple, the spice in capsicums and of course, the layer of that stringy, melted yet not watery cheese!
(Note that as I type this, my saliva production rate is rapidly increasing)
PLUS, this is just the basic, common ingredients. In certain pizzas, there can be extra cheese or generous portions of grilled chicken, prok or even seafood! Honestly, can you resist the temptation of your dream pizza?
Ok, perhaps not all the ingredients appeal to everyone. For one, I know there are many who ABSLOUTELY DISLIKE the olives, anchovies and pineapples on pizzas. But it is because of the enitre mix up of ingredients that make the pizza heavenly!! Let me use an analogy.
Assuming that the ingredients are organs - important but not attractive individually. When conexisting in the same space, they become something like the human body - the most brilliant thing on Earth!! This is hence, my "dissection" of the pizza!!!
"So how?" you may ask. Since most of us cannot resist the allure of pizzas, what can we actually do?
Well, there is really no way out! After all, you cannot have the best of both worlds, right? Ultimately, it boils down to a matter of choice! Do you eat to live or live to eat? Pick.
However, there are some things you could do to make the pizza a little less unhealthy. Obviously, the root of the problem is to make it less fattening. There are a few ways to go about it.
Firstly, we could substitue vegetable oil with olive oil. However, if you ask me, they should not be using vegetable oil in the first place! It contains trans fats, which is MUCH worse than animal fats. It also increses the risk of heart diseases (and heart attacks) in people! (sound the red alert!!)
Another way is to reduce the amount of flour used (ie reduce the thickness & density of the crust). This would mean less carbohydrates, which will hence lessen the risk of gaining fats!
Lastly, we should try to avoid ingredients that ,in itself, are fattening. Examples include chicken, ham, pork etc. Therefore, go for vegetarian pizza! There is definitely no added fat! Plus, there are proteins and fibre (which prevents constipation!!) It is also delicious!!
Honestly, though the above solutions will improve nutrition of the food a little bit, it really does not make any significant impact. Therefore, it is still best if we cut down on our intake and EXERCISE MORE TO ENSURE THAT WE ARE FIT AND HEALTHY! We could perhaps reduce our intake of pizza to once a month? And we MUST exercise at least twice a week!
PIZZA MAXIMUM ONCE A WEEK! DON'T FORGET!
